Workshop in the Woods

wswlogo.150xGeorgetown's Workshop in the Woods, a summer day camp for kids ages 5-14, aims to encourage creative expression, build self-esteem, and foster a love and pride of community and surrounding nature.

Workshop in the Woods (WSW) is non-competitive theater arts camp where kids can explore nature, dance, sing, act, create arts and crafts, and play games - and get a little bit messy in the process!

We have many unique traditions at camp. Free Friday is a day when kids get to pick the activities that interest them, Market Day is a day when kids get to trade mini-crafts that they have made with other kids at camp, Performance Days are when we present the skits or dances we have been working on, Color Day is when the campers dress in their groups colors, and Tongue Twister Tuesday is a day when kids bring in tongue twisters to share with their groups. Team building is very important to us, we incorporate team building games where the campers need to communicate with each other and their interns/ specialists.

boywithbubbleswithmarginWith such a wide age range, WSW works hard to ensure appropriate groupings and individual attention. Groups are co-ed and decided based upon your child’s age. An average group has 20 children. Our staff is comprised of experienced individuals who have worked at WSW in previous years, or were at one time campers themselves. The camper to staff ratio is 1 to 4, and staff are assisted by 3-4 interns.

Many of our interns/ specialists were once campers themselves. Our camp community is made up of many camp "veterans" and returning campers that we have created life long friends and memories with each other. There is also an intern/ specialist application that is available for those who have completed our AIT program or have camp experience.

WSW is a site-specific enrichment program created in partnership with the Georgetown Conservation Commission and Friends of Camp Denison, the public-use recreational area in Georgetown where our camp is located. Whenever possible, we include programs and activities that are unique to the Georgetown area. For example, the Friends of Camp Denison will build rockets and launch them with the campers - a big hit last year that we look forward to trying again this year. We have had the Merrimac Hat Band come to sing to the campers, as well as a dog that performs frisbee tricks! Other highlights include kayaking with Essex River Basin Adventures on Baldpate Pond and marching in the Yankee Homecoming Parade.

We are also committed to fostering a sense of place and responsibility for the natural world, implementing a campus-wide recycling program and drastically cutting our waste.

At WSW we really believe in the power and influence of positivity, and we like to impart that spirit to our campers and staff. Our theme for this summer is "Life Is Good!" Each week we will be exploring different reasons why life is good, and to end the summer we will be celebrating 15 years of Workshop in the Woods by doing some of our favorite activities, playing our favorite games, and inviting all of our WSW family to join us in the celebration. We will also be creating a mini free library to be posted on the Newburyport Rail Trail.

"My daughter has had such a great time this past week! Thank you for providing such a unique and positive experience. I know she loved the fishing and kayaking, but when I asked her what her favorite part of camp was, she replied 'everything!'" ~Heather, WSW Parent

This year, the second under the co-directorship of Ann Corthell and Vittoria Penna, we are excited to add a sixth week to our schedule and allow parents to register by week instead of by two-week session. Here is the schedule by week:
